New Brunswick's Electronic Health Record (EHR)
An Initiative of 'One Patient One Record'
EHR Overview
The Electronic Health Record started with the Provincial vision of One
Patient, One Record (OPOR). This vision provides current, relevant health
information in a standardized manner and protects the privacy, confidentiality
and security of patient information. This is accomplished through a single point
of access which is available anytime, anywhere as shown in the diagram below:
Health Portal | A single entry point for authorized health care providers to access the One Patient, One Record (OPOR) components as seen in the diagram above. |
Electronic Health Record (EHR) | The EHR allows authorized health care providers to access and view current and relevant health information. The EHR information is viewed through the Clinical Viewer. The information available is described in more details under the section
Content of the EHR. |
Clinical Viewer | A bilingual software program that is used to access information in the EHR. |
Client Registry | A provincial information system for patients and clients of the New Brunswick health care system. It contains current patient health identification numbers and demographic information. |
Provider Index | A centralized table of New Brunswick providers including but not limited to physicians, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists. |
Clinical Data Repository | A centralized repository where clinically relevant information is collected, stored, and viewed by authorized health care providers through the Clinical Viewer. The CDR provides Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiology reports as well as patient encounters in the healthcare facilities around the province. |
Drug Information System | The NB Drug Information System (DIS) is an electronic system that allows authorized health care providers to access and manage individuals' medication information. |
Diagnostic Imaging Repository | The Diagnostic Imaging Repository represents one consolidated patient imaging record for each patient within the province's health care system. It includes demographic information as well as diagnostic images and reports issued by the regional health authorities. |
Integration of Health Information | The Integration of Health Information layer is where all information regarding patients and other systems is received or sent in the form of electronic messages. Messages are created immediately as new information becomes available. |
Electronic Medical Record | A system installed in physicians offices allowing users to enter information on all patient's visits to the office (ie: appointments, clinical notes, billing, etc). This system is also linked ot the Provincial Electronic Health Record above. For more information, see Electronic Medical Record on the main page. |
